future of wasted denim
Background: Organized by Sysav and Siptex, the RE:DENIM competition invited designers and creators to explore new circular uses for discarded denim. Participants received seven kilograms of pre-sorted denim material from the Siptex recycling facility and were challenged to transform it into 3–5 new objects or garments. The goal: to rethink denim’s lifecycle — from waste to resource — through creativity, craftsmanship, and material innovation.
Madame Tuss’à-så Vaxkabinett: In collaboration with architect Göran Lundqvist, the project addressed denim’s greatest environmental challenge: water. By combining denim’s absorbent nature with wax’s water-repelling properties, a sealed, watertight cabinet was created. Inside, recycled denim fibers were placed, moistened, and seeded — forming a micro-environment where textile waste could nurture new growth. From cradle to grave, from fabric to life.
